It is a tradition here in Japan to visit a shrine during New Year to pray for a happy and bright year. This year, we visited Sengen Shrine last Saturday, January 5th--- a bit late to avoid crowded worshippers and visitors. 
After tossing some coins to the offeratory box and pulling the cord hanging in front, then clap about twice... Sachan with papie prayed for their good luck!
